Meet my camel… Kammy!

For those of you who are thinking that I got a deal and swapped my boyfriend for a camel, the answer is no. Hahah But Kammy is very charming! Every time he gets up I fear I’m going to land on my face, so I have to lean back firmly because when he stands up with the back legs first, he throws me forward before I am thrown up in the air. And he is pretty tall!

20km from the Algerian border, in the Erg Chebbi Dunes in Sahara desert, our berber guide ties the camels to each other in a line and guides the first camel with the others following him. We are heading to the desert for a night in a berber camp 4km from here.

Up and down the dunes

Up and down the dunes, here we go.

I must admit after a while it isn’t comfortable to sit on the camel anymore. It is a very bumpy journey, especially while going down a dune, where sometimes the camel just digs his legs in the sand and we are thrown forward… But at this point I feel no pain, so much is the excitement of contemplating the different shades of orange unfolding in front of my eyes as the sun goes down. Soon we are surrounded and we can’t see the beginning or the end of the desert any longer. My thoughts go to those who have gone mad looking for water and food lost in this vast landscape, or those who are caught in the middle of a sand storm…

Soon we approach the berber camp! How cute!!

Our guides have prepared dinner for us: vegetables tagine, and after dinner they join us, playing and singing!

Later on, when everybody is asleep, we sneak outside to gaze at the night sky. There is an incredible silence with occasional grumbles of distant camels. We are alone under a sky full of stars, the fiery little twinkles are so much brighter upon the darkness of the desert. it is mesmerizing… and oh! A falling star!!! Make a wish…

At 5am we are up and ready to get on the camels for a sunrise ride (incredibly more painful than the day before).

And that is as far as I got on this journey with Kammy.
He is so handsome, isn’t he? 😉

I couldn’t recommend the CamelTrekking tours company more.
Omar, the owner was very efficient responding to my emails.
And a big THANK YOU to Ibrahim, a caring and funny driver.

xX Until next time Morocco! Xx
