Colourful Temples of Bangkok – photo gallery

On my first day in Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit I wandered in-between temples!

Oh wait, confused?!

I was as confused as impressed! The 21 words written above compose the official name of Bangkok. Thai people shorten it to just Krung Thep, which means “City of Angels”. It is the longest place name according to the Guinness World Records.

But that wasn’t the only thing that impressed me.

It was the pallet of colors I found in the walls of Bangkok, and by that I mean the Buddhist Temples! Authentic pieces of art stand scattered across the city! Each temple agglomerates a collection of astonishing structures that hold different functions within the Buddhism culture.

White walls framed with flower-patterned porcelain tiles, others with gilt walls, covered in shiny red and green tiled roofs. A feast to the eyes that I tried to capture through my lens:

Wat Phra Kaew – Temple of the Emerald Buddha

Wat in Thai means Temple and it is an agglomerate of structures usually surrounded by a wall
Phra Ubosoth or the Chapel of the Emerald Buddha – the main building of the temple
Chapel of the Emerald Buddha – decorated with gilt and coloured glass mosaics

The Demon Guardians – there are six pairs all facing the Chapel of the Emerald Buddha.
The Demon Guardians – It is believed they guard the Emerald Buddha from all evil spirits
Prasat Phra Dhepbidorn or The Royal Pantheon – statues of the past Kings of Thailand are enshrined here
Phra Mondop – the Buddhist library
Phra Siratana Chedi – a golden stupa too big to fit in my lens! ha!

Phra Wiharn Yod – used as a chapel of Buddha images
Phra Thinang Dusit Maha Prasat
Phra Thinang Chakri Maha Prasat

Wat Arun – Temple of Dawn

Wat Pho – Temple of the Reclining Buddha

Love the pictures Andreia! I had an 8 hours stop over in Bangkok and rushed around getting to a lot of the central sites as quick as possible, so 100% agree it can be confusing, yet beautifully overwhelming.
